The NH-U9 DX-4189 features a larger, custom-designed contact surface for LGA4189 platforms. Based on the proven, 92mm size NH-U9 heatsink and equipped with two of Noctua’s award-winning, PWM controlled NF-A9 92mm fans, it combines strong performance with excellent compatibility for 4U systems and other space-restricted applications. The NH-U9’s direction of airflow is perpendicular to the long axis of the LGA4189 socket, so it is ideal for workstation builds where the top PCIe slot must not be blocked and this orientation is required for having the cooler exhausts towards the I/O panel. Topped off with the professional SecuFirm2™ mounting system and pre-applied NT-H1 thermal compound, the NH-U9 DX-4189 forms a complete premium quality package for quietly cooling LGA4189 based Xeon workstations and servers.
Please note that the NH-U9 DX-4189 is a dedicated version for the Intel LGA4189 socket. Due to its customised larger base, it cannot be used on most other sockets and is incompatible with Noctua’s standard mounting kits.
The plastic CPU carrier frame supplied with the cooler is for LGA4189-4 (P4) only. LGA4189-5 (P5) systems use the same mounting mechanism systems but require a different CPU carrier frame. Customised for LGA4189
The new DX-4189 line coolers are dedicated, customised solutions for Intel’s professional LGA4189 platform (Whitley), which makes them an ideal fit for both Ice Lake-SP based 3rd generation Xeon Scalable CPUs (Platinum, Gold, Silver or Bronze) and W-3300 series Xeon processors for workstations (Ice Lake-64L).
Enlarged contact surface
At 70x56mm, the heatsink’s copper contact surface is more than double the size of the standard model. Tailored to fit the enormous integrated heat-spreaders (IHS) of Intel’s LGA4189-based processors, this customised design allows for an optimal heat flow from the CPU over the base to the heatpipes and on to the cooling fins.
SecuFirm2™ mounting system with standard Intel parts
Integrating standard Intel parts such as the anti-tilt mechanism, Torx® T30 PEEK nuts and LGA4189-4 (P4) CPU carrier frame, the cooler’s mounting system is fully compliant with Intel’s installation guidelines and provides a familiar mounting procedure for experienced LGA4189 users. A Torx® T30 mounting tool is included.
LGA4189-4 (P4) CPU carrier frame
The scope of delivery includes an LGA4189-4 (P4) type CPU carrier frame for Intel Ice Lake-SP and Ice Lake-64L based processors (Whitley platform). However, the heatsink’s SecuFirm2™ mounting system also supports P5 type LGA4189 sockets (LGA4189-5) for Intel Cooper Lake based processors. Compact 92mm size for best compatibility
Thanks to a total width of only 95mm, the NH-U9 DX-4189 provides 100% PCIe clearance and never overhangs the top PCIe x16 slot. At the same time, its height of only 125mm allows it to fit smaller cases and most 4U size rack-mount enclosures.
Airflow perpendicular to the long axis of the socket

Dual NF-A9 PWM fans
The NH-U9 DX-4189 is equipped with two of Noctua’s award-winning NF-A9 92mm fans. This push/pull dual fan configuration makes it possible to achieve a level of cooling performance that is remarkable for such a compact cooler and comes close to the bigger NH-U12S DX-4189.
PWM support and y-cable
The NF-A9 premium fans supplied with the NH-U9 DX-4189 support PWM for convenient automatic speed control through the motherboard, which allows them to run near silent at lighter loads and to speed up only when necessary. The supplied y-cable makes it possible to power and control both fans simultaneously from a single motherboard fan header.
Pre-applied NT-H1 thermal compound
Noctua’s much-acclaimed NT-H1 is a pro-grade TIM solution that provides minimum thermal resistance and outstanding long-term stability. Having the paste pre-applied to the heatsink base ensures optimal bond-line thickness and saves precious time in installation. Ideal for system integrators!
